In an industry known for being secretive and exclusive, we want to share an inside look at the team building Databento. By being open and transparent, we hope to debunk some stereotypes while also introducing the people behind our product.

Based in the vibrant city of Chicago, meet our software engineer, Carter Green!

Drawn initially to trading through an economics course, Carter interned as a hybrid trader at Belvedere Trading. There, he realized the technical challenges of trading fascinated him far more than the trades themselves. This insight redirected his focus toward the technical side of the industry, eventually leading him to Databento.

Nonetheless, Carter continues to apply his expertise in options trading. Here’s a photo of him leading a seminar on options trading at a past offsite event:

In our dynamic and fast-paced environment, each day presents new challenges for the engineering team. Here’s a glimpse into Carter’s day-to-day:

"My day includes answering user questions, reviewing market data specifications, writing and testing features, and troubleshooting bugs. Together with our team and the company, we engage in numerous discussions about the design of solutions."

As for what's unique about Databento, Carter highlights the international diversity of our team despite being small in size. He finds this aspect particularly beneficial for both the team and our customers, noting:

"Having a global customer support team available around the clock is a real benefit. This setup ensures that no one needs to work late nights and guarantees that our customers receive the help they need, whenever they need it."

When asked about his career achievements, Carter reflects on his time at Databento and his contributions.

"I’ve been at Databento for two years now, and I’m incredibly proud of our progress. I’m especially proud of my work with our public Rust and C++ clients, the DBN library, and my support for our customers. It’s very rewarding to hear from users of the tools I’ve worked on. If something isn’t working as expected, it further motivates me to make improvements."

Coming from a background in economics, Carter notes the diverse range of skills and experiences that lead people to work at Databento. Reflecting on this, he shares, "As someone without a computer science degree, I find Chris Sellers' story—from becoming a pilot to discovering a passion for programming—particularly inspiring."

Outside of work, Carter is an avid outdoor enthusiast. His passion for endurance sports, such as trail running, cycling, and cross-country skiing, fuels his drive for self-improvement. These activities keep him physically active and allow him to share meaningful experiences with his wife.
