Frequently asked questions

How is my data usage metered?

When you stream historical or live data, you are billed for every outbound byte of data at the moment it is sent out on our network. If your connection is lost in the middle of a streaming request, you don't get charged for the remaining data that was requested but not sent.

When you make a batch download request, you are only billed once for the request. You can download the data as many times as you want over 30 days — with no additional charge.

How does my choice of encoding affect cost?

All of our data is priced ($/GB) by the data's uncompressed size (GB) in binary encoding.

You can also request for data in CSV and JSON encoding, for no additional charge. We transcode data from binary to CSV or JSON server-side before sending it to you, but you only pay for the data based on its original, uncompressed size in binary encoding.

How does my choice of compression method affect cost?

Your choice of compression method doesn't affect cost.

In order to keep your request sizes predictable and consistently proportional to the number of data records consumed, we charge you for data based on its uncompressed size (GB) in binary encoding.

To minimize bandwidth use, our APIs send data in compressed form by default. You can verify the pricing by uncompressing the data, or requesting for the data in binary encoding without compression.

For historical data, how does my choice of delivery method affect cost?

We only apply an extra charge for physical delivery by hard disk drive. All other delivery methods (web and FTP) incur no additional charges.

Where can I find specific pricing for each dataset?

You can find estimated pricing by searching for various datasets in our Data catalog. You can get exact pricing by customizing a specific download request with our Batch download tool.

You can also programmatically get exact pricing through our various integration methods, like our APIs and client libraries.

Can I redistribute your data?

Your redistribution rights depend on the dataset. Databento doesn't apply any redistribution restrictions. However, for each dataset, we have to pass through the licensing restrictions from the original publisher.

Most of our datasets can be redistributed internally or externally after 24 hours. You can look up the licensing terms and redistribution rights for each dataset with our Data catalog, or choose your specific licensing requirements in the License manager.

I found the same data from another vendor and your pricing is much lower. Is this a mistake?

That is not a mistake! Databento's pricing is often lower because of our usage-based model and direct distribution from each venue.

Instead of locking into monthly fees, you can cut costs significantly by only paying for the data you use. We also negotiate special partnerships with venues, or pay license fees to distribute data directly from the source.

This direct distribution allows us to cut out third-party intermediaries, removing significant costs and data integrity issues that these third parties can introduce.

Why is real-time data more expensive than historical data?

We price datasets based on the costs associated with licensing, storage, and distribution. In general, publishers charge us more for real-time data than data that is delayed or received after 24 hours. IP bandwidth is also generally more expensive at the colocation facilities where we distribute real-time data.
