Frequently asked questions
Why do the virtual circuit fees vary so significantly?
Virtual circuit fees depend mostly on the distance between the data centers (housing your network and Databento’s network) that you’ll be connecting. The high-end of this pricing estimate assumes that you may require a transcontinental connection. In most cases, our customers have closers that are situated much closer to our primary locations and will see much lower virtual circuit fees.
What’s a primary colocation site (colo)?
A primary colocation site offers the lowest latency to a venue’s matching engine. This is typically the data center where the matching engine is housed. In the cases where a venue has latency or fiber equalization between multiple colocation sites, then multiple locations may be considered the primary colocation site. For example, several US equities venues in Equinix NY4/5 implement fiber equalization. Databento usually hosts its servers in primary colocation sites to minimize hops to the matching engine.
What’s a point of presence (PoP)?
In this case, any location that Databento offers dedicated connectivity other than the primary colocation sites, CyrusOne Aurora I and Equinix NY4/5, where Databento’s real-time servers and live gateways are located.
What’s Equinix Fabric?
Equinix Fabric is Equinix’s software-defined interconnection service. It is similar to other software-defined network (SDN) services like PacketFabric and Megaport. Equinix Fabric makes it easy to set up low-latency, high bandwidth layer 2 connections between your network and Databento’s if you have infrastructure in an Equinix data center. The same Equinix Fabric ports can be used to connect to multiple financial service providers in Equinix’s ecosystem aside from Databento. Equinix Fabric adds a mean, one-way fabric latency of 22.9 µs.
If your servers are in a different Equinix data center from Databento’s servers, you’ll have to pay for virtual circuits between the data centers. This is included in our estimated pricing and payable to Equinix directly—although we can also collect it
Where can I learn more about Databento’s live architecture?
See our documentation .
Is there any contractual requirement for dedicated connectivity?
We require a customer to be on a Plus or Unlimited plan (previously called Enterprise) for dedicated connectivity. See our pricing for more details.
Does Databento offer other custom connectivity services?
Yes, we’ve helped many customers find creative new ways to connect to our services that help minimize their costs. In fact, all of our advertised dedicated connectivity solutions emerged from bespoke, one-off arrangements we had originally set up for other customers. Contact sales for more details.
Does Databento offer colocation services?
We may have excess space, power, and ports in our racks that may meet your requirements. However, most customers are better served by a specialized colocation provider. Contact sales for more details.
What’s Aurora DC3?
This refers to the CyrusOne Aurora I data center, the primary colocation site of CME’s matching engine. This callsign was used in the past before CME sold its data center to CyrusOne. Databento retains this naming convention for legacy purposes, since we have data that spans from before the data center changed hands. Other vendors may refer to this data center as AUR1.
What’s the difference between Equinix NY4 and NY5?
These two data centers are adjacent buildings in Secaucus, NJ. Most vendors that offer connectivity in one location will offer connectivity in the other, and Equinix generally charges the same fees for cross-connects between the two or within either data center. Moreover, many trading venues practice fiber equalization to ensure the same latency from both data centers. As such, in many cases they’re practically the same.
NY5 has the advantage of being the newer data center, hence it has more WAN connectivity providers and may appear to have a lower ping from the internet. It is also closer to the west, thereby being closer to the microwave demarcation point.
In contrast, more matching engines and financial firms are located in NY4 because it has existed for longer. NY4 has the overall latency advantage for most users as not all trading venues and firms exercise fiber equalization.
