Frequently asked questions

Why are there similar products on CME and ICE?

Both of these exchanges offer similar or overlapping products in key commodity markets. They may provide contracts for the same commodity, such as power, but with different specifications, contract sizes, underlying, or delivery instructions. This allows traders to choose the contract that best fits their trading strategy or hedging needs. Additionally, having multiple listings on different exchanges can enhance liquidity.

What are futures prices vs. spot prices?

Both CME (Chicago Mercantile Exchange) and ICE (Intercontinental Exchange) primarily focus on futures and options contracts rather than spot prices. Futures prices represent the agreed-upon price for a commodity to be delivered at a future date, reflecting market expectations about future supply and demand conditions and anticipated price movements. In contrast, spot prices reflect real-time market prices for the immediate delivery of commodities.

What’s the difference between ICE Endex and ICE Futures Europe?

ICE Endex is known as the leading energy exchange in continental Europe and provides products in European gas, emissions, and regional power (electricity) markets. On the other hand, ICE Futures Europe offers a broader range of energy commodities and covers 50% of crude and refined oil futures trading worldwide. ICE Endex and ICE Futures Europe are part of the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) group, but they cater to different segments. You can find both datasets in our data catalog.
