Meet senior software engineer, Nick Macholl.

Nick started his career in aerospace, then transitioned to working on test automation for hardware trading platforms at Tower Research Capital before joining Databento. He saw an opportunity to build something from the ground up with Databento, noting:

"I'd been working on real-time systems for my entire career and wanted more exposure to new technologies."

Databento's remote-first culture is unique in the finance industry. Nick is impressed with Databento's remote culture and appreciates that productivity, innovation, and a competitive product aren't tied to having everyone in the same place. He added,

"The team is very collaborative, and discussions often happen in a way that everyone can voice their opinion and offer solutions. Some of our best ideas come out of group challenges and test sessions."

Nick draws inspiration from his entire team, especially Chris Sellers, our engineering manager.

"My first interview was with Chris Sellers, who also came to software engineering from a non-traditional career path. That helped me feel at home in the team because it's less about where you come from and more about what you can do."

When asked what his proudest career moment has been thus far, Nick shared a challenging but rewarding situation he experienced prior to Databento while working in the aerospace industry.

"I've been fortunate enough to work on several cutting-edge technologies in my career. I'm most proud of my work in aerospace, where I invented a phased array health check algorithm because it challenged me to keep attacking a problem until it cracked."

He added, "Sometimes, the best solution to a problem isn't obvious until you've fought with the problem enough to become friends with it."

Living near Lake Tahoe, outside of work, Nick enjoys hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter. When he's not outside, he's often playing video games or board games with friends!
