Today, we're introducing John Park, a software engineer on the Core team.

John started his career at Crabel Capital Management, where he built low-latency trading systems for futures and FX markets. Working closely with market data in that environment sparked a deeper interest in the infrastructure powering these systems.

"Over time, I realized I wanted to broaden my impact beyond building tools for a single proprietary trading firm and contribute to products used by a wider audience," he explains. The opportunity to work at Databento—serving developers, researchers, and trading teams across the industry—was a natural next step.

John's work frequently centers around building and refining market data integrations, most recently including a new depth-of-book feed.

"It's been a particularly interesting experience because it combines protocol-level engineering with thinking about how the data gets used in practice," he notes. Beyond development, his days include design discussions, code reviews, and collaborating with teammates to reason through edge cases and performance considerations. Even fully remote, the team keeps those conversations productive and engaging.

One of the things John values most about Databento is the team's approach to feedback. Rather than the top-down dynamics common at many trading firms, ideas here get challenged openly and evaluated on their merits.

"There's a strong emphasis on open communication and giving honest, constructive feedback, done in a way that's focused on improving outcomes rather than assigning blame. Collaboration isn't just encouraged, it's built into how work gets done day to day."

That spirit comes through in the people he works with. John is particularly inspired by fellow engineer Carter Green, who brings both trading and software engineering experience to the team. "Seeing someone bridge domain knowledge and system building so naturally is motivating," John reflects.

When he's not at his desk, John enjoys making music and doing astrophotography. Music is a creative outlet that lets him unwind after a day of technical problem-solving, while astrophotography provides an excuse to step away from screens and explore the night sky.
